Urokoya Sohonten is a long-established store founded in 1684 in Oishida-machi, Yamagata .
With the desire to provide everyone with safe, secure, and healthy sweets, we carefully select each ingredient, including water, rice, sugar, and eggs.

``Kura Mochi'' is a local sweet that has been passed down from ancient times in the Mogami region of Yamagata Prefecture . There are two theories that the name Kuura Mochi came from the meaning of a rice cake that can be carried around for a long time as a portable food (kujira mochi), and another theory that it was given because of its shape, which reminds people of whales. Nowadays, there is a custom of offering kura mochi to dolls during the Peach Festival, and the whole family celebrates the arrival of spring by eating kura mochi. The secret to Urokoya's Kujira Mochi's popularity is that it uses freshly ground mochi rice. It is a popular scaly product that is rich in flavor and glossy and cannot be found anywhere else.

[Delicious way to eat Kuuramochi]
Slice it thinly with a knife and enjoy it as is. If it becomes hard, we recommend cutting it into 1cm pieces and baking it in a frying pan or toaster oven.
When storing, cut it thinly and wrap it in plastic wrap to make it easier to eat later. It can also be frozen, so you can defrost it and eat it whenever you like.

the Gift of Thanks for donations from Oishida-machi

Oishida-machi, Yamagata
A town of poetry, water, greenery, and culture with Mogami River
Oishida-machi is located almost in the center of Yamagata Prefecture, with an area of approximately 80 square kilometers and a population of approximately 6,000.
The Mogami River flows north to south through the center of the town, and Oishida, located downstream of the three difficult spots on the Mogami River (Goten, Mikawase, and Hayabusa), once flourished as the largest boat landing point on the Mogami River due to its advantageous location at the intersection of land and water routes. Along the Mogami River, special embankments with painted white walls have been built, reminiscent of the boat transport culture, and old houses still retain storehouses and Hina dolls handed down from the Edo period, retaining vestiges of the past.
The area is also blessed with abundant landscapes of water and greenery, and has been visited by many writers and painters, including Matsuo Basho, Saito Mokichi, Kanayama Heizo, and Komatsu Kin.
The main industry is agriculture, with rice and squid cultivation thriving. It is also known as a producer of unpolished buckwheat, with the production volume being among the highest in the prefecture. The large temperature difference between summer and winter, and between day and night, causes a large accumulation of starch, which is said to produce a rich flavor.
In recent years, the town has been focusing on developing into a "soba village," with over a dozen handmade soba restaurants lining the streets, and on weekends many people from inside and outside the Prefecture visit the town to try the soba that is unique to Oishida. In 2001, the Ministry of the Environment selected "Oishida-machi Soba Village" as one of the "Top 100 Scented Landscapes."
